Can You Dig This?
Archeology and Paleontology seem like big words
to kids. Now Sciensational Workshops for Kids and
Montgomery County Parks and Recreation makes it come
alive. Simulated fossil excavations with over 100
fossils, dirt, and lots of fun. Some of the fossils
are up to 500 million years old. Discover an actual
dinosaur bone and a 500 million year old trilobite.
We will provide the cleaning brushes, 3 lenses
magnifies, labels and specimen bags. We will use our
geological time and fossil chart to identify 20
million year old sharks teeth, mammal bones, and
more. Make fossil plaster replicas of a cave bear
tooth, ammonite, and Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth. See
and work with our mineral collections, along with
growing your own crystals and learn to be a rock
hound and identify different rocks and minerals. Get
a picture of you lifting a giant Pumice specimen
right from Mt. St. Helens. This is a great
opportunity for kids to learn. This workshop is for
ages 6-10, and the registration fee is $135

Why travel when the fun is right in your
backyard? Celebrate your holiday at the Frog Pond
July 4 from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM! Let our enthusiastic
lifeguard staff play games with your children. The
celebration will include; music by DJ Kerri Taylor,
hula-hoop contest, balloon toss and a greased
watermelon contest. Prizes will be awarded to
contest winners with a free summer pass to the best
dressed red/white/blue bathing suit! Normal Frog

Robo Workshop "The Weasel" - The Wall Hugging
Robot
Come on down it the Mid Co. Park Activity Center
from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and experience a whole new
perspective into the world of robotics. During this
4 day workshop participants will have the
opportunity to build “The Weasel”. The Weasel is
sleek, smart, and simply amazing. It has two motors,
a three speed gearbox, and WOW can it go fast! It
has two photo sensors that allow it to see a line or
feel its way along walls and around corners. Watch
it as it goes through a maze. It loves to hug walls
and you can have it follow you. This Weasel is so
smart. It has a built in sonic tracking system. It’s
all yours to make and keep. Learn about gears,
sensors, electronic components, circuit boards and
much more. You will also get to build other things.
Design and program robots that you will build. Learn
about robotic technology, the wave of the future.

Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of
bluegrass and southern gospel music at Dominion

New River Valley Scuba Center provides the
exhilarating experience of breathing air underwater!
Stop by July 19, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM where certified
scuba instructors will open up a whole new world of
adventure for your children. Ages 6-8 will have
instruction in snorkeling and ages 8-12 in scuba
diving. Upon completion of the pool dive, each child
will receive a personalized certificate stating that
they have participated in a scuba diving experience
and a picture of themselves underwater in the scuba
gear! Masks, fins, snorkels and scuba gear will be
provided. Participants must fill out medical form

Coventry Games Whitewater Canoe and Kayak Race

Forest Service offers diverse habitats along trails
that meander through wetlands, hardwood forest, open

Blacksburg's annual Steppin' Out festival takes
to the streets of the downtown every first weekend
in August. From 10 am - 10 pm on both days,
pedestrians fill the colorful village center to
enjoy craft vendors, sidewalk sales, festival foods,
and three stages of live entertainment. After 27
years, Steppin' Out remains perennially fresh. New
features include street performers, a giant sand
"beach" and dunking booth. The annual Draper Run
takes place on Friday evening, as the festival is
just gearing up. The mile-long run includes a Fun
Run for kids, a race, and a run thereafter. Three
stages of performance include the main stage, which
features national and regional acts performing
everything from bluegrass to bhangra; an accoustic
stage; and a community stage where local talent
captures the spotlight. Time is 10:00 AM - 10:00
PM. There is no admission fee, and children are

the theater of the Highlands Festival or taking in
both events on this excursion. “EVITA”, Eva Peron,
who served as the First Lady, saint to the working
class and received opposition from the military and
the elite, became a powerful influence within the
nation speaking on behalf of labor rights and
founded the nation’s first female political party.
Her life is told through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
musical fusing haunting chorales with exuberant
Latin, pop and jazz influences. The festival
features more than 100 exhibitors of antiques, art &
crafts, gardening, photography and wine tasting.
Lunch will be on your own at the festival. The

Beginner Kayaking Weekend
Try whitewater kayaking down the New River
without the expense of buying all of your own
equipment. Day One- After we get you acquainted with
your kayak and the rest of you gear, we will
immediately get to work so that you feel in control
of your boat. The first day of instruction will take
place in calm, user-friendly water. We will practice
getting in and out of the boat and focus on balance,
body mechanics, strokes, turns and leans. Learning
to “wet exit” and practicing the “Eskimo rescue”
will help you find a comfort zone in your kayak even
when you are upside down! A day of practice will
help you build a perfect foundation of smart
paddling habits that are grounded in good technique.
Day Two- We start putting the basics we learned on
Day One to work on a scenic 8 mile Class II section
of the New River We will review paddling skills you
have learned and introduce new ones that will allow
you to maneuver you kayak more efficiently. You will
use the river to focus on the dynamics of current,
peel-outs, eddy turns, steering and balance, and
bracing in current. (all equipment, instruction, and
transportation are provided). You must register by
August 2, one week prior to class. Fee is

This park features 400 scenic acres nestled in
the Heart of the Blue Ridge. Participants can test
their angling skills and tour one of the most
beautiful bodies of water in the area aboard a
fishing boat with an electric motor or paddle boat.

all kinds making this one of the largest shows of
the Southeast. Wear comfortable walking shoes as you

Tales of Virginia's New River
John Copeland. A Fisheries Biologist with the
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
will present a lecture on the New River, its fish
and the people who enjoy this wonderful natural
resource beginning at 7:30 PM. Learn about the
natural history and biology of New River fish and
how this knowledge might help you hook your next big
catch! Includes opportunity to see live fish! Come
by the Outdoor Classroom in Wildwood Park, Radford.
